You Will Shutter
I just got my hands on the new Scorsese film Shutter Island trailer (WATCH IT HERE) starring DiCaprio doing his HAR-rible Boston accent again ala The Departed. It is an all-star cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer and one of my clients Elias Koteas.
All the elements of a classic Scorsese film appear in the film, most notably the use of his go-to boy-toy DiCaprio. But this time around good ole Marty takes a departure from his New York gangster films and delves in the dark underworld that is a psychological thriller/horror film.
Shutter Island, much like the once Alcatraz Island prison, is an isolated mental hospital for the criminally insane where they only take the “most dangerous, damaged patients. one’s no other hospital can manage.” Located 11 miles from the mainland, patient Rachael Solando has escaped and dually appointed Federal marshals Daniels (DiCaprio) and Aule (Ruffalo) are there to investigate her disappearance. The rest of the trailer unravels like that of a M. Night Shyamalan thriller, but more Sixth Sense and less UnBreakable.
What makes me most excited is Mr. Bushy Eyebrows venture into the thriller/horror genre. Mainly because my tween years were spent sneaking into R rated slasher flicks when I was suppose to be seeing Disney’s latest feature-length film. I grew to love the insensity that was the unraveling of the chaos foreshadowed by the slow, steady cam and ominous lighting. I was a sucker for the joltings that were the introduction of characters at car windows, around corners and the inevitable run-intos (honestly, who walks backwards in the woods?).
There’s no question that Scorsese’s latest will be more than your average nightmare inducing movies, and the real draw here is that the genre is beginning to attract some of the real players in the industry. And, it’s about time! Audiences love a good scary movie and why not throw in a star-studded cast, money-making director and award-winning actors to rake in the big bucks.
Admittedly, there has been an influx of new horror movies inspired by those of my more youthful days. Watching the trailers at The Hangover, I was shocked (Shocked!) to realize it’s been 10 Years since the first Final Destination movie and they’re now on Final Destination 4 in 3D (But the whole 3D movie craze is for another blog post). But, amid all the gloom and doom of this genre there is always that one movie with the juiciest of plots. In this case, it’s Sorority Row where The Hills door knob (every one gets a turn) Audrina finally gets hers. You’ve been warned. It’s not pretty.
